Managing Director, Boodle and Dunthorne
Boodle and Dunthorne is synonymous with high class jewellery. They pioneer aspirational design, and naturally choose platinum to set their finest gems in. Celebrity customers include Penny Lancaster, David Beckam and Martine McCutcheon.
Michael Wainwright is responsible for Boodle and Dunthorne's brand development. He oversees the commercial aspects of the business and the continual investment into design, advertising and shop environment. Michael's passion and enthusiasm has seen the size of the company double over the last five years. Key to this is ensuring that whilst Boodles expands, there is no slip in their standards or commitment to the customer.
What is your background and interests?
I've now worked in Boodles for 20 years, after initially qualifying as a chartered accountant! A lot has happened in that time, our company has expanded from three provincial branches in the north-west, to a chain of seven shops, including four in London.
Besides jewellery, my interests include most sports - particularly golf and football. I am also a wine enthusiast, and enjoy vegetable gardening.
Tell us why platinum is Boodle & Dunthornes' metal of choice?
Unquestionably, platinum is the finest metal to work in, and is also naturally perceived as the highest quality. Its natural lustre, durability and malleability ensures that pieces made in platinum have the edge over pieces made in other metals.Who is responsible for your platinum designs, and where does the inspiration come from?
We have an in-house team of three people, headed by the award winning designer, Rebecca Hawkins. They provide the inspiration for our platinum designs. How many different lines does B & D feature?
I couldn't tell you accurately, but the number of different lines runs into the hundreds!Do you see the current platinum demand in bridal increasing, decreasing or continuing to be the "standard" in the market?
The demand for platinum bridal jewellery has increased dramatically over the last ten years, and if anything is still growing. About 80% of the engagement rings we sell are made in platinum. What is your favourite piece of platinum jewellery?
It would have to be the "Kit and Kaboodle" bangle we produce. I bought one for my wife last Christmas.

Who would be your 'platinum woman'?
Cate Blanchett. Her style is naturally elegant, and she comes across as her own person, very self assured. She doesn't need to shout for attention, a lot like platinum.
