- Storing pieces separately in jewellery box compartments or bags will limit scratches or bangs from other jewellery.
- Cleaning platinum jewellery periodically will optimise its appearance. Use a pre-packaged jewellery cleaner or soak in a mild solution of soap and warm water. Buff with a soft cloth.
- Professional cleaning every six months is recommended for platinum set with gemstones.
- Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals when wearing any jewellery. Although they won't affect the platinum, they could discolour diamonds or other gemstones.
- Housework, gardening and other heavy work is hard on any fine jewellery. Removing your platinum pieces beforehand is the best insurance.
- Always choose a qualified jeweller for adjustments, resizing, polishing or professional cleaning. Be sure that jeweller has a certified platinum trained bench worker.
- Over time, platinum develops a natural patina, a matte finish, that is preferred by many owners. If you prefer a high finish on your platinum pieces, a qualified jeweller can maintain it with regular polishing.
Natural Wear
Scratching is the natural result of wear and occurs in all precious metals. But platinum has a unique advantage. A scratch will merely displace the metal and very little is actually lost. Gold, on the other hand, will lose more metal when scratched. |
